Steeples dot landscapes and mark town centers throughout New Hampshire.
Many of these historic structures are endangered as denominations have seen congregations decline along with financial support. Church and steeple maintenance is easily deferred until the problems become too visible and the remedies too expensive to ignore. Unfortunately, external funding for church preservation is quite limited, as most charitable foundations avoid such projects; federal assistance, of course, is non-existent. Covered bridges, yes. Commercial buildings, maybe. Venerable churches, no. Thus the financial burden rests with local communities to do the hard work of preserving their own cultural and religious heritage.
This web site highlights a few of the projects now underway in New Hampshire. The stories are told in hopes of fostering greater interest and wider support for these important landmarks. Some have served our communities for two centuries and more. They have provided space for serious deliberation, joyful celebration, and profound mourning. They span New Hampshire's past, present, and future.
